Emergency Medicine is a speciality with the knowledge and skills required for the diagnosis and management of acute and urgent illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with a full spectrum of episodic undifferentiated physical and behavioural disorders. [International Federation for Emergency Medicine].
The Emergency Department (ED) is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
So essentially, if you become injured or unwell in an urgent or unexpected way for whatever reason, we are here for you! Whoever you are, whenever it happens.
Priority is given to patients with life-threatening injuries or illnesses, but we endeavour to see all patients in a timely manner.
Importantly, the Emergency Department at St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) caters for patients aged 16 years and over. If you or your child is under the age of 16, then you need to seek emergency care at your nearest paediatric emergency department.
